Backpacking Backpack Internal Frame Questions

Backpacking Backpack Internal Frame
What type of backpack is the best for backing through Europe?

I’ll be staying for over a month and a half, but I always over-pack, and I want something that I can carry a little extra in, but has to be fit me right since I’m only, 5’0″. And what’s the difference with a backpack with an internal frame and one with an external frame?

Take a small pack.
Last time I traveled with a pack that is for most people only a daypack.
The best pack I have ever taken.

You can not pack enough for 6 weeks, so bring enough for a week, two at most, and do laundy.
You will walk with your pack much more than you expect and it will seem to get more heavy with the minute. Specially when your room is at the topfloor of a 5 story place with no lift.

The best you can do for finding a fitting pack is to take a bag full of heavy things (potatos or books are great) to an outdoorsport shop, and fit the packs. First empty, next with a load to see how well they fit when in use.
But I am afraid that most places do not like customers that are so prepared.

There are not many packs anymore with an external frame and those that are still on the market are specially good for long hikes, bringing your tent and sleeping bag and cooking gear, all on the outside of the pack.
For traveling by public transport and specially for flying those are not good.
An external frame is a rack of metal with straps to fit it to your back, on the other side of the frame you will have a bag (the actual pack,) and space to tie the other things you want to take.

An internal frame is better, as it will not catch onto things, but most packs I have seen recently have no frame at all.
They are sturdy enough without a frame. Specially the smaller sizes.
An internal frame is a bit of metal that is made to shape your pack and keep it in shape, it is fitted inside the pack, it can sometimes be removed, but if the pack has a frame you better only use it with it.
